Web Design Mistakes

2016

It’s 2016, and while social media marketing has become incredibly important, you still need a great website.

Indeed, every business has a website, but not all of them are great. However, when you do stumble upon a really good website, its appeal is instantly recognisable. So how do you make sure your website is as appealing as it needs to be?

A good place to start is by understanding 3 of the most basic web design mistakes that you may not even be thinking about.

1. Your web design makes it hard to read

There’s nothing worse about a bad web design than not even being able to read it. You can have the most sophisticated and eye-popping features, but if you can’t read the text, you’re just begging your visitors to get frustrated and leave.

Quick tip: Look up the sites of some of your favourite brands and notice how they use colours, layout and fonts to improve readability.

2. No search box

A good website will be jam-packed with everything your visitors need to learn about your business – but there’s no point having it all there if they can’t find it. So make sure the navigation is logical and accessible, and never leave out a search box.

Many people who are in a hurry will click onto a site and look just for a phone number or address or just type what they are looking for into the search box. So make it easy to find and check that the search engine actually gives relevant results.

Quick tip: Google has a feature called Custom Search, where you can just copy the HTML from the control panel and paste it into your home page.

3. Slow loading times

With internet speeds getting ever faster, many web design professionals may be tempted to feature really high res images, complex Flash introductions, and other add-ons that chew through megabytes. But research (https://blog.kissmetrics.com/loading-time/?wide=1) has shown that every passing second visitors have to wait for a page to load, the chance they will just give up increases exponentially.

Quick tip: if your site takes more than 3 or 4 seconds to load, you need to consider putting it ‘on a diet’ to speed it up.
